Cobble Hill Apartment, Brooklyn, NY

The clients for the Cobble Hill Apartment faced a common New York dilemma: a family with growing children in a two-bedroom apartment.  The apartment, in a converted former church building, is in a charming, convenient location, and moving to the suburbs in search of more space was not appealing.

The design problem was a surgical re-planning of the existing apartment, making three bedrooms where there had been two.  To increase the feeling of space in the apartment, the cramped, dark kitchen was gutted and opened to the living / dining room.  Storage nooks and shelving were designed to maximize use of each available square foot.

Fixture placements and material selections in the kitchen were geared toward creating a calm and pleasing tableau when seem from the living space.  The happy accident of an angled demising wall on one side the kitchen creates a forced perspective effect with the wall of millwork, increasing the perceived depth of the room.
